Only FOUR MORE Days

Falling in love with…a book. Sigh. Have you ever done that? Have you ever read a book, closed it up, thought long and hard about what you'd experienced, then opened to Chapter 1 and started all over?

I have, but not very many times. Two in particular come to mind: A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux and Come to Grief by Dick Francis.

Occasionally, I read historicals and AKISA is one with a touch of time travel. I was so involved with the heroine's story, I sobbed at the end with her. (Well done, Jude!)  I've given it to many friends who loved it too.

Dick Francis centered his mysteries around the English horse racing business. When I first read his books, I gobbled them like chocolate. Handsome asked me why I loved them so. I finally – FINALLY – confessed I wished I could write like him. In Come to Grief, a very bad man does bad things to ponies. It is utterly shocking and why he won an Edgar Award for this book.

I, on the other hand, write sweet romantic comedies. Here's a tiny take from "San Diego or Bust":

My boyfriend is a dirt wad. I just decided.

With a humpf, I dragged my pink tote up the narrow aisle to the plane's exit, accidentally banging it into the seats along the way. The relieving notion of being back home in Sommerville caused the tension in my chest to fade a smidgen.
A quick peek to the exit told me where Davis, my boyfriend, stood waiting for the okay from the ground crew to head out. His glance my way didn't look at all pleasant. Similar to one wrapped in disappointment with a downward tilt of his mouth.
         I didn't care much. I just decided.
The words creep, jerk, moron, and “why in the hell am I still dating him??” jumbled my thoughts around. My heart pounded as anxiety ratcheted inside me again.
Maybe I shouldn’t. Maybe I should not put up with him anymore.
The deepest part of me knew I shouldn’t be with Davis Griffith Swansea, III any longer. I was just in denial. Over the past year, I’d had brief, momentary twinges of dumping him; then, he’d go and do something incredibly romantic like bring me Godiva chocolates—“I know how you love these.” Or buy me a new book by my favorite author—“I happened to see this today.” Or whisk me off to an intimate dinner à deux at the latest and greatest bistro--"I know you'll like this place."

          My head had gone stupid.

I most definitely have an author I wish I could write like: Joy Fielding. I absolutely love the way she gets you into the main character's head.

I've always love Jude Deveraux's books. Her historical romances were the best.

My husband and I have all of Dick Francis' books. He is one of my favorite authors. One of my favorite romance authors is Susan Mallery, I have become attached to her Fool's Gold series and must keep reading.

Vicki, you and I share a love of A Knight in Shining Armor. As soon as I finished it, I reread the last chapter two more times. Then I read the whole book again. Another book I love and read over and over is Green Darkness by Anya Seton. I also love Tony Hillerman and his Navajo books. I was so sad when he died. I wish I could write like him, so evocative.

Hi, Melissa! I just adore this historical. I still get tears at the ending. too.

Hi, B! I've not read any Gena Showalter and mostly because that's not my genre. But I'm with you on a drink and a good book. Read on!

Hi, Kim! Yeah, a Dick Francis fan!!! I've read Susan Mallery too. So yes, keep reading and maybe you'll read one of mine??

Hi, my friend Cara! Yes, we do share love for AKISA. Sigh. I've not read Tony Hillerman, but I can imagine we felt the same when he and Dick Francis passed. I've not read Anya Seton either. Hmmm, have to check on that one. Oxoxox

Hi, Llasha Luma! Thank you. and glad you stopped.

I do have some books that I read over and over. Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass is one...and Jane Yolen's The Devil's Arithmetic (it's a YA book). My mother loves the Janet Evanovich books so I read those so we can talk about them.
