The Genius of Dr. Seuss #kidsbooks #readingtokids

My friend next door took dancing lessons, went to camp, and learned to play the guitar. She came home and taught me everything she knew. And when she received a new Dr. Seuss book in the mail, she shared it with me.

Theodor Seuss Geisel aka Dr. Seuss  was born March 2, 1904. He worked as an illustrator and cartoonist for various publications. However, his career took off in 1937 when he published his first children's book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. During World War II he produced several short films for the U S Army. After the war, Dr. Seuss focused on children's books. (Wikipedia)

So when my boys came along, I read Dr. Seuss to them, having the boys try to figure out their own words which rhymed with his. I can almost recite all of Green Eggs and Ham, Hop on Pop, and One Fish, Two Fish. Every Christmas, I watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

But wait! There's a new one coming, one he'd set away and is just now being released after many many years--

I'm sure many of you read Dr. Seuss. Which are your favorites?

I remember (and still have them) many of the titles you listed. I used to hate Dr. Seuss books (sorry) because I thought they were kind of senseless. I don't feel that way any longer. I read them to my kids and really got into them and how silly and funny they were. I'm definitely going to read the new one. How very cool.

Hi, Patricia! I can see where you would think some silly. Perhaps reading a whole bunch at once did that. The boys seemed to be stuck on a few and by repetitive reading, they were reading quickly. Be interesting to read the new one, won't it?

I loved, loved, loved Dr. Seuss! I related to the sneetches without stars on their bellies. And was so glad to read them later to my children, and now my grandkids! For some reason, Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb really resonates with them. Dum, ditty, dum, ditty, dum, dum, dum!

Different ones for different reasons ... "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" "Green Eggs and Ham" "The Foot Book" and "The Lorax" are three favorites, but I have to say that the one that resonates with me the most, the one that if I were to choose to give to a child would be "The Sneetches and Other Stories", especially "The Sneetches".

Um, obviously I can't count ... that would be 4 favorites. LOL

There is a camp in North Carolina that had the campers paint the busses, giving them free reign to be as creative as they wanted. One bus is called "The Lorax." And, it was painted well before the movie came out. Love Dr. Seuss! I've even seen most of these books translated into Chinese. Talk about interesting looking books. Thanks for letting us know. :)

Hi, Liese and Eve! I have never heard of the Sneetches. One time, some teachers read aloud in a very theatrical venue Green Eggs and Ham. It had to be the funniest "play" I've ever heard.

Then there are the Dr. Seuss "similar to" books: Hooper Humperdink-Not Him. Only #1 son said, "KaKeem." We were like what??? "KaKeem." He pointed to the book. Took me forever to figure out "KaKeem" was "Not Him." LOL

And he had a white cat stuffed animal with shocking pink hair. Yep, she's Pink Thing.

I love all of his books but I have to say my favorite is "One Fish, Two Fish..." Read that one over and over again to all my nieces and nephews.

Love Dr. S, I guess I'd have to say The Grinch is my favorite character as well as the book. I read them all to my kids when they were young and I still have those books, and have read them to my grandkids! Looking forward to the new one that was discovered.

Hi, Angelia! I love this one too--"This one had a little star. This one had a little car." LOLOL Thanks for stopping.

Hi, Judy! I can't not watch the Grinch at Christmas. "His heart grew three sizes..." is so wonderfully written and the film was drawn by the master animator, Chuck Jones, the guy who wrote, animated, and directed too many Bugs Bunny films.

Dr. Seuss is one of those authors that everyone must read. :) Especially aloud.

I never read Dr. Seuss as a child, but then, most of his books were released after I was in high school. However, I enjoy watching The Grinch at Christmas and vaguely remember reading Green Eggs and Ham. Enjoyed your post!

Hi, Melissa: Thank you for posting on Triberr about how reading Dr. Seuss aloud is good. I'd never thought of it.

Hi, Ashantay! Thank you so much for stopping. Green Eggs and Ham is so much fun. Yep, can recite parts of it too.

I couldn't pick just 1 favorite! My grand kids watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas year round (the newer version with Jim Carrey). I always enjoyed The Cat In the hat because it was so silly!

Vicki Batman, sassy writer said...

Hi, Cathy! You know, I've never seen the live version of Grinch. I couldn't bear to. I love the animated one with Boris Karloff's voice and Chuck Jones' work. I like how the kids watch year round.

My favorite Dr. Seuss is "Horton Hears A Who!" ("A person's a person, no matter how small). Thanks for the post.

Hi, Red! It's hard to pick the best. Thanks for stopping.

Hi, Angela! Isn't that a perfect line? You are so welcome and thank you for posting.

It's so hard to pick a favorite. I love them all!

Hi, Janie! Wow, I'm impressed you have read them all. I wish I'd had a check off list when the boys were younger and we'd read them then. Thanks for stopping by.
