When growing up and Halloween came around, my sisters and I had to make our costumes, not buy. No way would my mother waste money on costumes to wear only once.
One summer, my friend and I were roaming the neighborhood and came across a yard sale. What caught my eye? A very beautiful blue dress with blue embroidery and yards of matching tulle for the underskirt. The price? Very affordable. I went home and cracked open my piggy bank and returned to the sale where I purchased the dress.
So Halloween comes around and I wore the dress. I truly felt like a princess.
Nowadays, I go as myself because I am married to a superhero. LOL. Yes, it's kinda cheating.

When I was a kid, I loved Halloween and I would spend weeks planning my costume. I've been everything from Raggedy Ann to a princess but my favorite costume of all time has to be when I dressed up as Princess Leia from Star Wars. I was her three times and I embraced my inner strong princess every time. She was such a positive influence on my generation and I think it helped me to grow as a girl.
Happy Halloween, Vicki! :)
Hi, N.N! Wow, to be Princess Leia. I did a ghost thing for a while. And witch too. Happy Halloween to you.
My mother always made me be a princess and I hated it. So one year I made my own cat costume. I didn't have black pants so I used gray ones and sewed on a piece of gray felt for a tail and made myself paper ears. I wore the princess costume to school and changed in the girl's room. The cat costume was a joke, but I felt powerful because I was being what I wanted to be, not what someone else thought I should be.
I remember making costumes and then no one seeing them because I had to wear my coat. Total frustration!

I know it's not PC now but I loved being an Indian Princess. I had a tie-dye sheet which was so pretty and I had a headband of the same material.
Hi, Zara! How clever of you. I never thought of being a cat. And I love cats. I like how you took control of something that wasn't a big deal in the grand scheme of life.
Hi, Liese! Seriously, in the pix I have with the dress, I have on a sweater. Sigh.
Hi, Melissa! And you don't sound too scary either. LOL
Between my mom, who liked to sew, and my grandmother, who liked to knit, my costumes were always made. One year, I think I was about 10-years-old, I was Scarlett O'Hara for Halloween.
I was a gypsy for one of my costumes. My mother had an old full length flowered skirt and an off the shoulder with Italian style ruffled blouse. Add to that a ton of jewelry, a red and gold scarf for my head, and a tambourine. I was about 10 at the time.
Hi, Angela! You are so lucky to have such creative women to do this for you!!! Scarlett is pretty funny.
Hi, Ilona! How much fun to be a gypsy. But I really want to know when did princesses become scary. lol
