The Last Days of Summer, The First Days of Fall #coolertemperatures #leavesfalling

Summer drags on forever in the state where I live. Oh, occasionally, we get a cooler breeze and then pop back to the nineties, then a cool front, and finally, we settle into fall. Used to be in October, we would have lots and lots of rain, especially during the State Fair. Trying to find a decent day to go was a challenge, but that has changed.

And like all things, will undoubtedly change again.

What is fun for us in October is to watch for the migration of the monarchs. Outside my kitchen window is a huge lantana. It's the plant that has tiny pink and yellow flowers in a bouquet. It will even grown after a car runs over it. Mine is about six feet tall and twelve feet wide. A friend from my old neighborhood gave it to me right after we moved to this house. She dug and dug and finally, it came up with a raggedy root. She didn't know if it would live and if not, she had another to pass on.

I stuck my piece in a hole, tossed water on it and let 'er rip. The plant took off. And has continued to do so. I've moved babies to other spots.

Most years, bees and butterflies visit it. This year, we had a lot of monarchs. My son had just commented on how large it was and maybe I should cut it back. Then the visits began. Truly a joy! And other varieties of butterflies came too.

And as if on cue, another front passed through, bringing a burst of rain. The butterflies moved on. And fall came.

Do butterflies migrate through your neighborhood?

I've had a couple of huge monarchs this year, but not the quantity I typically see. And my three hummingbirds appear to have also moved on. I miss them.

I don't have any lantana at this house, but my last one had the same pink and yellow flowers. I had bought a couple of other colors, but they'd curl up and die while the pink and yellow plants thrived.

I'm a summer gal, but am ready for Fall this year.

No lantana, no roses (they contracted rosetta and died), but a beautiful vine in the back with big orange flowers (I'm so ignorant about plants, I don't even know the name). We get honeybees with those. Hey, orange--perfect for Halloween!

Best,
Liese

Hi, Pam! When we trim this one back, I'll save some baby plants for you. We had a couple of hummingbirds too. And a rat. Ick!

Hi, Liese! I lost three knock out roses from the rosetta. When the last one caught it, I sprayed the crap out of it with watered vinegar. So far, so good.

Wow... what a sight to see. I don't know if we have a migration, but sometimes we get a lucky period of butterflies or dragonflies visiting. I always love to see them. It's other-worldly!

Hi, Angela! We have lots of butterflies. I have had large yellow and another blue swallowtail too.

Hi, Chris! Try butterfly bush. I don't have one, but I have seen how this plant attracts them.

Hi, Pamela! Aren't butterflies so happy!

Hi Liz! The most hummingbirds I've seen were at a butterfly aviary in Tucson and in Colorado. Thanks for stopping.

.Hi, Melissa! I like dragonflies. I used to get praying mantis too. Very large ones. Sorta creepy.
