Are you? After the hustle and bustle of the holidays, after
everything is packed away and you’ve begun to gather your 2008 IRS
information, are you organized?
(a) Uh, no.
(b) Okay, maybe, sorta.
(c) I want to be?
I did do a little better at the organizing stuff this year.
When I packed Christmas decorations away, everything fit into nice clear boxes
with lids that I’d bought at Target. (Hmmm, maybe I should label them
and theircontents. That’s an excellent idea.)
As I’m typing this column, I look at my desk covered with
papers. I could gather the ones about contests and possible editor/agent submissions
into a folder. Done! That was too easy.
I can glance four feet to my left at the closet -- doors always
open -- where I file papers and store supplies. It’s a mess, like a two-headed
hairy black monster with pointy teeth, leaning over my shoulder, arms raised,
which won’t go away. The urge to get in there and purge, to make the monster
disappear, overwhelms me.
However, I have another urge -- a big pull, one which says
“open a Microsoft word doc and type away.”
My month off is over and it’s time to get back to work.
Nothing will get read if I don’t write it. So today, I took
tentative steps to rev my engine. I reviewed my folder for ideas and wrote an
essay. I critiqued a friend’s chapters. And as a result, my fingers are
tingling. Cool.
I’ll push the closet revamp and the labeling of the boxes aside
and get to what I really want to do -- WRITE A BOOK!
How about you? Have you set writing goals? Do you have a good
place to work? Are you pushing aside organizing stuff for that rainy day down the road?

I tell my friends I'm a Type A person in the body of a Type B! I love organization but I seriously need help to stay on track. Thankfully my Type A genes showed up in my daughter who helps this mamma keep it together!
Yes! I do have some writing goals for this year...I'm posting daily on my blog - well I might do all my writing in one or two days but the posts will show up daily. Just getting started so we'll see how it goes.
Hi, Melody: and thank you for visiting with me today. You know, we all love the results of taking things out of closets and redoing. I think it's the process and knowing it takes a while to accomplish. Eye on the prize!
Congratulations on your goals.
Organized...Hmmm, I'm still trying to figure that one out. ;)
I'd rather be writing too.
Vicki, I'm still waiting for the organizer to click in. Thanks for giving it a nudge. Maria
Hi, Tina! Today, I'd rather be reading. Since I'm going to a writing seminar, I think I'm going to get in a couple of hours too. Just for me. Have a happy writing day.
Hi, Maria! I have this writing seminar tomorrow and needed to get organized for it because I had to take things, find my notebook, name badge, etc. I began cleaning out the bag I used. I was organizing. *tossing hands in air and laughing* Thanks for stopping by.
I love to organize with piles. Of course that's because I don't have a file cabinet in my office/son's guest room. (He only lives with me part time). I really need to get back in there and go through the files for taxes. That's coming up. Good news is that I have a file folder for the new items coming in.
Well, Vicki, I sent my query letter and synopsis to Chuck Sambucchino to be critiqued and am waiting for that to come back, so I feel like I'm in limbo. I don't want to start to write another book but I'm itching to write sooo badly right now.
I took some time off over the holidays, too, Vicki. And I am very organized, but always find something else I can discard or put in order in my home. But I wrote a list of writing goals I'd like to accomplish in 2014 and already took the first step by writing and submitting a magazine story.
Hopefully, the other goals will follow along as the year progresses.
Better organization pops up on my New Year's resolution list every year...again and again and again.
Hi, Melissa! Handsome drove me crazy when I caught him filing on the floor. Guess who has a pile? ...guilty. Hugs!
Hi, Patti! I can't wait to hear how the critique goes. If it comes back tough, you can do it. I know you can. Hugs.
Hi, Sydell: you know when I do the most cleaning? After I've done a major writing project. I look at my office like I've never seen it before and start here and there and before I know it, done! Except for said pile on the floor... lol Thanks for posting.
Am I organized...hum...depends on who you ask! Thanks for the post.
Well said!
