I loved the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and when I heard a sequel, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, was coming--woohoo!
Sadly, my paper (who gives the hardest ratings of all humankind to movies) gave it a C. Did not matter to me. I went anyway and was DELIGHTED!
The Second Marigold has our cast settled into jobs, life, and an approaching marriage; however, the hotel is bursting at the seams and the only solution: open a second hotel. The cast is features an ensemble cast featuring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Celia Imrie, Penelope Wilton, Ronald Pickup, Diana Hardcastle, Tamsin Greig, Tena Desae, Dev Patel, Lillete Dubey, David Strathairn, and Richard Gere.
The acting was smooth as always with Maggie Smith getting great lines and a tear-jerker ending. And maybe that was the reviewer's problem. He wanted more mystery instead of just a nice story about people.
I liked it and have spread the word because reviewing is subjective. And what one person likes, another may or may not. Many people like sci-fi. I'm not a sci-fi person (yes, adore Star Wars); so I tend to avoid those.

Are there film genres you prefer over others? Do you always follow someone else's reviews when choosing what to watch?

Vicki, I'll start from the bottom. No, I usually avoid reviews of books, movies and television. Yes, I prefer this type ... good ensemble and solid acting.
I love Merchant/Ivory films, adore British humor, human interest ... and above all ... British mysteries.
I follow PBS Masterpiece Classic, Contemporary and Mystery. In the past, there have been some classic horror or sci-fi that I often rewatch ... scarring myself again and again ... The Shinning, Halloween ONE, the first two Alien movies ... I am a total nut for Star Wars but only the first three ... Oh well ... the list is too ...much too long.
Thanks for another stellar review and although I'll get shot by die-hard Jody fans ... I avoid all her books and detest her movies ... and yes ... I've read and seen her to be sure :)
Hi, Florence: I read reviews, but know our local paper seems to be harder on movie reviews than, say, the NYTimes. Isn't that interesting? Handsome saw this one before I did (I know, he didn't wait for me!!) and he liked it a lot.
I don't know that I really review. More like have an opinion. lol
Sometimes movie sequels fall flat and don't match how great the first was, but fans of the first movie will still enjoy it. I like to see sequels for movies I love and nothing anyone says will stop me. :)
