Grandmother's legacy - gardening #growingroses #gardeningtales #RLFblog

My aunt and uncle live fifteen minutes away. She loves to garden, particularly roses. About two years ago, she gave me a cutting from Grandmother's famous green rose plant. I put it in a pot and it grew!

A few months ago, we toured the garden and she showed me a rose plant in a pot with a giant pink bloom. She said she had two cuttings rooted and I could have one. She found her shovel and worked the ground with it. The grasped the main stem and pulled. It came out all right, but not with ideal roots. We both frowned and wondered if this one would make it. She said to try and if not, I could have the other one.

I took the plant home all the while thinking it would not grow. Most of my successful gardening ventures are centered around lantana where you can run over it with a car and it will still take off.

The area where I live had lots of rain which is ideal for cultivating new plants. In fact, we didn't water the yard until two weeks ago. Every now and again, I would toss some water on it. Then I noticed the plant was growing taller.

A couple of months passed, and then last Sunday, I found this bud:

This morning, a beauty bloomed:

Thanks to my aunt, Grandmother's rose legacy continues. My brown thumb might be morphing to almost green. lol

Hi, Angela! Thank you so much. I really treasure getting these gifts from my aunt which were part of Grandmother. Lots of people post who would you go to dinner with or visit with and I always say here.

Your grandmother gave you great gifts!

Hi, Joanne! I hadn't thought of that, maybe because I don't consider myself the best photographer. Hugs!

Beautiful roses! My sister and I were discussing estate planning and I jokingly said,"well if you leave me anything, let it be your hat pin collection". I make hats and have always been fascinated by anything hat related. She came for a visit a few months later and she, Mom, and I met for lunch to celebrate my upcoming birthday. My sister had packed, and brought her precious collection with her to give me as my birthday gift. She said,"I want you to have them now, so that I can enjoy knowing that you have something you love so much". Needless to say, their were lots of tears with our lunch.

Oh my golly, Linda! That is the best gift. You obviously have a sister who loves you dearly. And yes, I would have cried too.

BTW, I'm impressed you make hats. Do you sell them?

What a wonderful post! I love that you have a piece of your grandmother. For years, my dad brought grape vines from my grandfather's home to each of his new places. He loved making wine from the grapes. This last move, was the first time he didn't do it and I'm sure he's missing it. I know he missed the garden he had because first chance he got, he put one in at my sister's house.

Nice post, Vicki. I LOLed when you wrote about the Lantana. I need to get me some of that. I forget to water. We're just far enough west of you, I can't forget to do that and hope for any of my potted plants to make it. So happy for you to have roses from your grandmother's plant. Very neat! I've shared.

Vicki, I agree with the others, this is a wonderful post. Several years back, my sisters and their husbands came to visit us all together. A brother-in-law brought along irises that he had gotten from my parents' garden. He gave me three irises, a yellow, a purple, and a white one. Every spring now, I have many of my parents' irises in my garden. We'll probably move when we get older to a smaller home. I plan on taking some of their irises with me.

Hi, Melissa! I love how your grandfather planted vines and made wine. Did he grow a special variety?

Hi, Susan! Grandmother grew iris too and I stupidly left some she had given me at our first house. Maybe I shall have another gift from my aunt. Thank you for stopping.

Hi, Karilyn! I'm not sure about the green thumb part. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Hi, Avery! I hope my roses continue to flourish and I'll always have them to remind me of grandmother and Auntie C. Thank you for stopping by.
