I couldn’t resist the “two-thirds”
off sale on the light tan, crossbody bag with a furry monkey (named Marlee) keychain.
Lightweight and roomy enough to accommodate all my paraphernalia, it was the perfect summer and travel bag.
At home, I took a closer look at the logo—Kipling—and wondered if there was any connection to author and poet Rudyard Kipling. Intrigued, I Googled the company and discovered the following backstory:
In 1987, three enterprising Belgians—Vincent Haverbeke, Xavier Kegels, and Paul Van De Veld—decided to shake up the conventional handbag world with a purse that would reflect their personal ideals and worldwide travels.
Their primary inspiration was The Jungle Book, a collection of fables written by Rudyard Kipling for his daughter Josephine. The entrepreneurs made it clear that their primary focus was the adventure, discovery and curiosity inherent in these fables, not the actual author (Rudyard Kipling) and his controversial sentiments.
Their mission statement: To live a vibrant and colourful life – go places never been before. Be curious. Dare to live the life we’ve always wanted. That’s our mission. Well, you may say: It’s just bags. Yes, that may be true. But sometimes it’s the simple things that make life easier.
While creating the purses, the color dye overheated, and the nylon was left crinkled. Risk-takers to the nth degree, the men decided to use the “damaged” fabric that has become one of the most recognizable in the world: crinkle nylon.
Kipling purses are also known for their signature monkey keychains with an array of monkey styles, among them puff monkey, pom-pom monkey, robot monkey, and puff tag monkey.

Angelica Delfino takes a special interest in the lives of her three nieces, whom she affectionately calls the daughters of her heart. Sensing that each woman is harboring a troubling, possibly even toxic secret, Angelica decides to share her secrets—secrets she had planned to take to the grave. Spellbound, the nieces listen as Angelica travels back six decades to reveal an incredulous tale of forbidden love, tragic loss, and reinvention. It is the classic immigrant story upended: an Italian widow’s transformative journey amid the most unlikely of circumstances.
Inspired by Angelica’s example, the younger women share their “First World” problems and, in the process, set themselves free.
But one heartbreaking secret remains untold...
